Norms for Risk
Norms for Risk
Renee Bolinger, Seth Lazar, and Alan Hájek
Synthese (05 December 2019)
Seth Lazar, with Alan Hájek and lead editor Renee Bolinger, co-edited a special issue of leading philosophy of science journal Synthese on 'Norms for Risk'. The papers, including one by HMI's Claire Benn, and another by Seth, explore how to extend moral decision-making to situations of risk and uncertainty. The ideas explored in this collection have direct application to the development of moral AI, and in particular our algorithmic ethics research stream, in which one of the central questions is how to design systems that abide by moral constraints when acting under uncertainty. The mathematical tools of decision theory, and their non-formal counterparts, as explored in this topical collection afford a foundation for any prospective work on developing moral AI.
