Seth Lazar was invited onto the Hi-Phi Nation podcast on an episode discussing Effective Altruism. Seth argues that, contrary to the Effective Altruism movement, we should not be dedicating a large portion of our donations towards preventing existential risk such as AI takeover. We are simply not in a position to know where the next existential threat will come from, and it is not clear that donating money towards such a cause will do anything to prevent it. Instead, we should put money towards causes that enable people to make choices for themselves about how to live.
