New Research Fellow to Join MINT and HMI

Michael Barnes, a philosopher presently at the Rotman Institute, University of Western Ontario, has accepted an offer to join MINT and HMI for a two-year postdoc, starting mid-2022. Michael’s position is funded by the HMI Grand Challenge.

Michael, who received a PhD in philosophy from Georgetown in 2019, has written on labour exploration, subordinating speech, and hate speech online. He is especially interested in how social & political philosophy and philosophy of language can help us to better understand our practices of communication. He’ll be working with MINT on topics related to platform governance, content moderation, and how algorithmic amplification contributes to subordinating speech online.
